AN UNDERRATED city in the south of England is set to open a brand-new attraction next spring.

A lot of coastal towns have fairground rides, and other attractions, for people to visit on their days out by the sea.

And one place that is set to get a brand-new attraction in 2024 is Plymouth.

Plans have been revealed to open a big wheel in Plymouth Hoe – a large area of south-facing public space in the port city.

The observation wheel will be 38m tall high, and it will provide visitors with 360-degree views across Plymouth Hoe.

There will be 24 enclosed gondolas on the wheel too.

Plymouth City Council still needs to grant planning approval for the wheel to be built.

If permission is granted, the new attraction will be bought to the city by Event Attractions Limited.

The big wheel is slated to open next spring, with Event Attractions Limited already acquiring a four-year license.

It is hoped that the new attraction will be constructed before Easter, and it will remain open throughout the summer until September 2024.

The big wheel will then reopen in the spring and summer each year until 2027.

A similar attraction was installed in Plymouth in 2011 until it was dismantled and shipped to France in 2013.

James Rogers, Event Attractions Director, told the Plymouth Herald: “We hope this will be a great attraction for the city and will be popular with residents and visitors alike and offers an extra reason for people to visit the city.

“We want to ensure the wheel is accessible to all and therefore will be inviting the local schools in the area to come and witness the spectacular views across the Hoe.

“We will also be offering heavily discounted tickets to local care organisations and to the residents of Plymouth.”

Earlier this year, Plymouth was voted the most underrated in the UK.

Also known as Britain’s Ocean City, it came in 7th place for most underrated in the world, and it was praised for its art scene and rich history.

This includes the new free art gallery The Box and the £7.6m renovation of Market Hall, which offers immersive experiences.

Plymouth is also home to the Grade II Art Deco Tinside Lido, which first opened in 1935 and overlooks the ocean.

Boozers can visit the Plymouth Gin distillery too, which is the oldest working distillery in England, while the Royal William Yard, first built in 1825, has lots of restaurants and bars to choose from.

There are even hopes that Plymouth Airport could reopen, having been closed for a decade.

Plymouth City Council leader Richard Bingley told local media: “It’s almost disrespectful to not offer an airport to people who want to come here to trade or visit.

“Plymouth as a city needs an airport and no stone will be left unturned until that happens.”

Meanwhile, a tiny island off the coast of Plymouth has confirmed plans to build two hotels, a museum, and a well-being centre on the island.
